Swedish: ornamental name composed of the elements ren ‘reindeer’ (or Ren- from placenames such as Renstad or even Rinna the former being named after its owner a nobleman Rehnberg; see Renberg) + dahl an ornamental spelling of dal ‘valley’.

Norwegian: habitational name from a farm name; the first element is either a river name or rein ‘strip of grass at the margins of a field headland’ the second element is dal ‘valley’.
