Ramskill Surname Meaning

Perhaps from Ranskill (Notts) which is recorded as Rauenschalf in about 1280. The place-name derives from the Old Scandinavian personal name Hrafn (genitive Hrafnes) or Old Scandinavian hrafn ‘raven’ (genitive hrafnes) + skjalf ‘shelf seat’.

Alternatively the place-name may be a Scandinavianized version of Old English hræfn ‘raven’ + scelf ‘rock ledge’.
