Ramshead Family History
Ramshead Surname Meaning
Apparently from Ramshead, a lost place in Bolton le Sands (Lancs), which is recorded as Ramesheued in about 1204 and Rameshout in about 1320. The place-name derives from Old English ramm ‘ram’ (genitive rammes) or an Old English personal name *Ramm (genitive *Rammes) + Old English hēafod ‘head’ or Old Scandinavian hǫfuð ‘head.
However, medieval evidence for the surname has not been found and so it may have an alternative unknown origin.
