Spanish, Galician, and Portuguese: topographic name from rama ‘branch’. Albanian: from Ramë (definite form Rama) a short form of the Muslim personal name Ramadan and its Albanian variant Ramazan.

Italian: topographic name from rama ‘branch’, a dialect form of ramo. Finnish (Rämä): probably from an old vernacular form of the Latin personal name Remigius (see Remy, compare Remes) or possibly from the Karelian personal name Rema, from the Russian Orthodox name Rem, from Efrem (see Ephraim). Alternatively, a nickname from rämä ‘reckless, loud-mouthed’.

Recorded as a hereditary surname in southeastern Finland since the 16th century. Indian (southern states): from a personal name, a variant of Ram. — Note: Since South Indians traditionally do not have hereditary surnames, this name was in most cases registered as such only after immigration of its bearers to the US.
