German and Swiss German: apparently an occupational name for a turnip grower from an agent derivative of Middle High German rabe ‘turnip’. (also Räber): from an ancient Germanic personal name Radobert a compound of rād rāt ‘advice counsel’ + berht ‘bright famous’.
