English: nickname from late Middle English rabet ‘young rabbit’. This word is not recorded until c. 1398 the usual Middle English word for ‘rabbit’ being cony (see Coney).

Irish: adopted for Gaelic Ó Coinín a variant of Ó Conáin or Ó Cuineáin (see Cunneen and Queenan) interpreted as if it were from coinín ‘rabbit’ although in fact the Irish name is from a diminutive of cano ‘hound wolf’.

It has also been adopted for Mac Coinín see Canning. Americanized form (translation into English) of Serbian and Croatian Zec Slovenian Zajc or Zajec all meaning ‘hare’ (informally also ‘rabbit’) and perhaps also of Slovenian Kunc with a possible meaning ‘rabbit’.
