Unexplained; possibly a nickname related to Anglo-Norman French couche (also found as culche) ‘bed storeroom; bale’.

Culch means ‘rubbish’ in some S English dialects (OED) and may be derived from the French word but it is not found till the 18th century and the late appearance leaves this uncertain.
