Some or all of the following bearers may alternatively belong with (2) if the Scottish family name migrated into England; it might explain the surname in NR Yorks but no evidence has been found to support this theory.

The ER Yorks surname of 1381 looks more like the personal name. From the lands of Pilmuir (Berwicks) or from any similarly named place in Lowland Scotland; from Scots pilmuir ‘piece of common ground enclosed by a fence and cultivated as arable’.
