Perree Family History

Perree Surname Meaning

The name is a respelling of French Perré, probably to preserve the pronunciation and stress. It is a variant of Perray from places so named in Saint Étienne-de-Chigny (Indre et Loire) and in Saivres (Deux-Sèvres). The place-name is said to denote a stony place.

Alternatively, it may be a respelling of Pér(r)ée, derived from an Old French term for a measure of capacity, especially of grain. This gives rise to a nickname that perhaps refers to a grain dealer.

In France, the name is chiefly associated with Normandy and Brittany.
