Apparently from Peasenhall (Suffolk), which is recorded as Pesenhala in 1086, Pesenhal in 1228, and Pessnale in 1483. The place-name derives from Old English *pisen *peosen ‘growing with peas’ + halh ‘nook corner’.

Some of the medieval forms such as Pisehalla in 1086 and Pesehale in 1254 show the first element alternating with Old English pise peosu ‘pea’.
