It can also refer to residence in the upper part of a settlement or at the top of a slope from Old English ofer ‘slope, hill, ridge’. North German and Dutch: topographic name denoting someone who lived above or beyond a settlement or feature.

Swedish (Över): ornamental name of unexplained etymology.
