It appears to be a type of formation particular to Sussex; compare Easton in Essex and East Anglia probably a variant of Olton alias Oulton from either of two places called Oulton in Norfolk and Suffolk.

The /l/ has been vocalized and absorbed into the preceding vowel. Variant of Oulton from either of two places so called in Cheshire and Staffordshire.
