Mickley Family History
Mickley Surname Meaning
German: unexplained. Probably also an Americanized form of German Michler or of some other similar (like-sounding) surname.
English (Northamptonshire and Essex): habitational name from any of various places so named such as Mickley in Ovingham (Northumberland), Mickley in Dronfield Woodhouse (Derbyshire), Mickley in Azerley (Yorkshire), or a lost Mickley in Headingley (West Yorkshire).
Most of the placenames derive from Old English micel ‘large, great’ + lēah ‘woodland clearing’, though the place in Azerley derives from Old English micel + haga ‘enclosure’.
