Croatian (Mažar): ethnic name from a variant of Mađar ‘Hungarian’ (see Madar) or from a variant Slavicized form of the Hungarian cognate Magyar.
Slovak (Mažár and Mážár): from mažár, the old form of mažiar ‘mortar’ (a device in which things are ground up with a pestle), possibly applied as a metonymic occupational name for a spicer.
