Italian Galician and Portuguese: from marra ‘hoe’ in Galician and Portuguese also ‘big mallet for breaking stones’ (from Latin marra) presumably a metonymic occupational name for one who made such implements or for one who used them.

English and Scottish: variant of Marrow.
