Unexplained apparently from the Low Countries. The earliest bearer in Yorks Derricke Mappin is identified by Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames as an immigrant from the Continent who married in Sheffield in 1593.

His son Ottho Mappin being recorded shortly afterwards.
