Mahoney Family History

Mahoney Surname Meaning

Irish (Munster): Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Mathghamhna ‘descendant of Mathghamhain’ a byname meaning ‘good calf’ a kenning for ‘bear’. There were two families in Ireland called O'Mahony in Cork and north-east Ulster.

In Ulster, Ó Mathghamhna has often been Anglicized as McMahon apparently by analogy with the later Mac Mathghamhna chieftain family in Monaghan.
