Hungarian: occupational name from lovas ‘rider’ (a derivative of ló ‘horse’); this may have denoted a messenger or a mounted soldier. This surname is also found in Slovakia, Serbia, and Croatia, where it is also spelled in the Slavicized form Lovaš; compare 2 below.
Possibly also an Americanized form of Hungarian Lovász ‘groom, stableman’ (see Lovasz). Croatian and Rusyn; Slovak (Lovás): occupational name from Hungarian lovász ‘groom, stableman’ (see Lovasz, compare 1 above) as a dialect or archaic loanword spelled in Croatian lovas and in Slovak lovás.
Norwegian (Løvås): variant of Løvaas (see Lovaas).
