Pakistani and Indian: from the name of a community of agriculturalists especially numerous in Madhya Pradesh and formerly in Uttar Pradesh.

Competing theories of the name's origin include: nickname from lodh, a tree whose bark the Lodhi of Northern India are harvested to make dye.

Another theory suggests it is a habitational name from the district of Ludhiana (Punjab).

This theory is based on the belief that this is the Lodhi homeland.
