The origin of the place-name is uncertain but it may mean ‘the open country of the inhabitants of the woodland clearing’ from Old English lēah ‘wood woodland clearing’ + the Old English group-name suffix -ingas (genitive -inga-) + feld ‘open country’.

There may have been some confusion with Lindfield; compare James Lingfield 1681 James Lindfield 1687 in IGI (East Grinstead Sussex); Mary Lindfield 1791 Jos Lingfield 1810 in IGI (Billingshurst Sussex).
