Licht Family History
Licht Surname Meaning
German, Dutch, and Jewish (Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name for a chandler from Middle High German lieht ‘bright’ ‘light’; Yiddish likht ‘candle light’. In some instances, the German name may have arisen as a topographic name for someone settling in a clearing (of a forest) or as a nickname for a light agile person, later (from Middle Low German līht) for an unsteady wavering one, and the Jewish name may have been ornamental.
German: habitational name from any of the places called Lichta or Lichte, both in Thuringia.
