Italian: possibly from a short form of the personal name Alleva. Spanish: perhaps a variant of Leiva. French: from Old Occitan leva ‘import levy’ hence a metonymic occupational name for a collector of such duties.

Czech (Levá): feminine form (denoting ‘the daughter or wife of’) of Levý (see Levy). Slovenian: probably a nickname from the name leva for a kind of lark.

In some cases probably also an American shortened and altered form of Greek Livas.
