In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar).

Dutch: occupational name for a fireman from an agent derivative of Middle Dutch lesschen, lessen ‘to extinguish’.
