Polish (Latuś): from a derivative of lato ‘summer’ (see Lato). English: nickname from Middle English latewys apparently a compound of late + wise ‘lately wise’ or ‘belatedly wise; wise after the event’.

The surname has been shortened to Latus and through folk etymology re-interpreted as Lat(e)house. It may also have been confused with Letts.
