Laid Family History
Laid Surname Meaning
Either topographic from Middle English lade ‘river crossing; watercourse’ (from either Old English gelād ‘difficult river crossing’ or lād ‘canal dyked watercourse’ or both) or possibly toponymic from a place named with one or other of these words.
If so, it is identical in origin with Loade. Such forms normally develop as lode but occasionally as -lade in place-names.
