South German: habitational name for someone from any of various minor places in Bavaria and Austria called Lacken or a topographic name (see Lachner). It is also found in Hungary where it is more commonly spelled Lakner, an Americanized form of German Lachner.
German: topographic name derived from Lack or Lacke, Germanized forms of Slovenian loka ‘water meadow’ and often used as a translation of the Slovenian equivalent Lokar.
It is an Austrian surname originating mostly from the (bilingual) Austrian parts of Carinthia and Styria and a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar).
