Altered form of French Lebeau 1 ‘the handsome’ and French Canadian Lebeau 2 with the feminine definite article la instead of masculine le (a change that may have also been the result of the American English pronunciation).

In some cases possibly also French: topographic name derived from Latin albellus ‘white poplar’ with fused definite article l'; or perhaps a variant of Abeau itself a very rare variant of the personal name Abel.
