Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian Kranjec, Kranjc, and Krajnc and possibly also of Croatian Kranjec: habitational name for someone from Kranjska (German name: Krain; Latin and English name: Carniola) a duchy of the former Habsburg Empire comprising the central part of Slovenia.

The name Kranjec was also used as a term denoting a Slovene. Krajnc is the fourth most frequent surname in Slovenia. Compare Kranz and Kranitz; see also Kraner.
