Polish, Czech, Belorussian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from Polish, Czech, and Belorussian kot ‘tom cat’, a nickname denoting either a cautious or a skillful person or a seducer. As a Jewish name, it is generally artificial.
The homonymous Sorbian cognate Kót (from Lower Sorbian kót ‘tom cat’) is found in Germanized forms only (see Koth, Kothe, Kott, and Kotte).
