Czech and Polish: from a pet form of Kos ‘blackbird’. Czech, Polish, Slovak, and Sorbian: from kosa ‘scythe’, a metonymic occupational name for a maker of scythes or a reaper.

The Sorbian surname is apparently found in the Germanized form Kossa only.
