Slovenian and Croatian; Slovak (Koreň) and Czech (Kořen): from Slovenian and dialectal Croatian koren, Slovak koreň, Czech kořen ‘(thicker) root’. Probably applied as a nickname to a strong, steady man or used as an occupational name for someone who gathered and sold roots and herbs.
