Konrad Surname Meaning
German, Polish, Slovenian, and Croatian; Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian (Konrád): from the personal name Konrad composed of the ancient Germanic elements kuoni ‘daring, experienced’ + rād rāt ‘counsel’. This fell together at an early date with another ancient Germanic name of which the first element was chunni or kuni ‘race, people’.
Konrad was extremely popular as a personal name in central Europe during the Middle Ages, being a hereditary name in several princely families, as well as enjoying widespread popularity among the people at large. It was the name of several Christian saints, including a 10th-century bishop of Constance.
It was also adopted as a surname by Ashkenazic Jews in German-speaking provinces of Central and Eastern Europe as a Germanized form of Kohn or Cohn. Compare Conrad.
