Kingswell Family History
Kingswell Surname Meaning
From the lost place-name Kingeswelle in Newchurch (IoW), which is recorded thus in about 1258 (the location being now represented by Duxmore Farm), and probably also from King's Well in Wartling (Sussex), which is recorded as Kyngiswell in 1550. Both place-names mean ‘the king's spring’.
This derives from Middle English king meaning ‘king’ (genitive kinges) and well meaning ‘spring stream’.
In Old English, the terms are represented as cyning (genitive cyninges) and wella.
