English and Scottish: variant of Cant. Indian (northern states): from Sanskrit kānta ‘beloved’. This occurs frequently as the final element of compound personal names such as Lakshmikant ‘beloved of Lakshmi’ (an epithet of the god Vishnu).

Another example includes Rajanikant ‘beloved of the night’ (an epithet of the moon).
