Probably from Jurston in Chagford (Devon), the name is recorded as Jordaneston in 1238, Jurdeston in 1443, and Jesson in 1765. In the surname, Jurdeston has been reduced to Jutson, where the final syllable has sometimes become -som spelled -sham.

The vowel change in Geston, Jetson, Jetsham, and Jesson is unexplained. The place-name means ‘Jordan's settlement’ from the Middle English personal name Jordan (genitive Jordanes) + Middle English ton meaning ‘town, village, settlement’.

The Kent name is alternatively a variant of Judson. Compare Thomas Judson 1630 in IGI (Canterbury, Kent).
