Americanized form (translation into English) of French Janvier. English: variant of Janeway or perhaps from the Middle English Januarie Janewarie Jeneuere (from Latin Januarius) the name of the month and also a Roman surname.
It later became an occasional Christian personal name in medieval Europe, borne by several saints.
