French:: possibly a nickname in the sense ‘muddy’ from a diminutive of Old French jaille ‘marsh mud’ in eastern France (Jura) denoting a cow with dark patches on its flanks.

Topographic name for someone who lived on marshy muddy land from a regional term of the same origin as 1 above but now found mainly in western France where the surname is rare.

Possibly also a habitational name from any of the minor places called Jaillet (Ain Drôme).
