Ingoldsby Family History

Ingoldsby Surname Meaning

English: habitational name from Ingoldsby (Lincolnshire). The placename derives from the Old Norse personal name Ingiald (genitive Ingialdes) + Old Norse ‘farmstead village’.

Irish: adopted for Mac an Ghallóglaigh (see Gallogly) by mistranslation of gallóglach ‘foreign warrior’ or ‘galloglass’ as ‘English’.

This gave rise to English and Englishby to form Ingoldsby by assimilation.
