The Berks place takes its name from an earlier place-name Ingle (from Old English *ing ‘peak’ + hyll ‘hill’ or from *ingel a derivative of *ing) + Old English flōde ‘channel of water’.

The Cumb place-name derives from Old English Engle ‘the Angles’ (genitive plural Engla) + wudu ‘wood’.
