Ingleton Family History
Ingleton Surname Meaning
Probably from Ingledon in Tenterden (Kent) with variation in the final syllable between -ton and -don. Compare Igglesden. From Ingleton (WR Yorks) or Ingleton in Staindrop (Durham) very likely the former in most cases given its proximity to Lancs, Westm, and NR Yorks, but the name in Durham, though recorded rather late, could be from the Durham place.
The Lincs surname presumably reflects migration from Yorks, but it could alternatively belong with (1). There is occasional variation in the final syllable between -ton, -don, and -den.
The Durham place-name probably derives from the Old Scandinavian personal name Ingjaldr + Old English tūn ‘farmstead, estate’. The WR Yorks place may take its name from an earlier place-name Ingle (from Old English *ing ‘peak’ + hyll ‘hill’ or from *ingel, a derivative of *ing) + Old English tūn.
