The surname appears to have originated in or near Clint and Thruscross (WR Yorks now NR Yorks) from where it spread to neighbouring villages such as Fewston and Hampsthwaite to York and to neighbouring counties.

Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames shows that the surname often came to be pronounced Ingleson.
