Ideson Family History

Ideson Surname Meaning

The name Eddison is a variant noted in the Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames. It mentions that William Edeson also appears as Ideson between 1583–6 in the Rothwell Parish Registers. Additionally, in the Skipton Parish Registers, there was a Humphrey Edson or Eedson whose son Humphrey was baptized in 1695. This family lineage led to a succession of Humphreys, with the surname appearing as Ideson from 172.

The correct pronunciation of the name is /ɪdəsən/. There is a comparison to another name, Iddison, which highlights a potential connection to Middle English origins.

The name may derive from the Middle English female personal name Ide combined with son. Furthermore, it could have been used as a pet form of Idon(y), as mentioned in part (ii). An alternative explanation suggests it comes from the Middle English female personal name Idon(y) or Ideyn, leading to the reduction of Idonson or Ideynson into Ideson.

Despite these potential origins, it remains uncertain whether either of the names discussed in (i) and (ii) actually led to the establishment of a hereditary surname.
