English: from the Middle English personal name Hucke or Hugge. Some examples (especially in northern England) may represent Old English (H)ucca, a pet form of Ūhtrǣd. By the late 13th century, however, this personal name had probably fallen out of use and Hukke and Hug(ge) will usually have been variant pronunciations of Hugh or its pet forms Hukin and Hugin.
