Hornik Surname Meaning

Czech and Slovak (Horník); Sorbian (Hórnik): occupational name from Czech horník and Upper Sorbian hórnik ‘miner’. The Sorbian surname is found mainly in a Germanized form (see Hornig).

Czech (Horník): habitational name for someone from Kutná Hora which is so named for its silver mine (compare 1 above).

Polish: variant of Górnik (see Gornik).

Jewish (Ashkenazic): apparently from Czech horník ‘miner’. Mining was not a traditional Jewish occupation so this may be an artificial adoption of the Czech surname (see 1 above).
