The Sussex place-name derives from Old English hæsel ‘hazel’ + denn ‘pasture’. The Lancs place-name derives from Old English *hæslen ‘growing with hazels’ + denu ‘valley’.

The other place-names derive from Old English hæsel + denu.

There has been some confusion with Hazelton.
