There may have been some connection with the locative name Hotham (ER Yorks) which is recorded as Hothom in 1285 and also appears in surnames as Hothom and Hothon and commonly as Hotham; or with ‘lands ... called Hattom Bakelowe’ in Brewood (Staffs) 1588 in Staffs Archives.

In Cornwall possibly related to Hotten.
