Hatswell Family History
Hatswell Surname Meaning
from Hatchwell in Widdecombe in the Moor (Devon) which is recorded as Hatteshull in 1352 and Hatteshill in 1478. The place-name may derive from Old English hætt ‘hat hat-shaped hill’ (genitive hættes) + hyll ‘hill’.
The early bearer forms without -w- represent survivals of the earlier pronunciation which has been affected by the frequent well (local) will ‘stream’.
