From any of three places called Hannington (in Hants, Wilts, and Northants). The Hants and Northants place-names derive from the Old English personal name Hana + Old English connective -ing- + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.

The Wilts place-name is recorded as Hanindone in 1086 and Hanedon in the 13th century and probably derives from the Old English personal name Hana (genitive Hanan) or Old English hana ‘cock’ (genitive plural hanena) + dūn ‘hill’.
