Hamp Surname Meaning

English: apparently a habitational name from Hamp in Bridgwater (Somerset). Sometimes perhaps a variant of the very common southern English topographic word ham ‘hemmed-in land riverside meadow’ (see Hamm) or a placename deriving from it of which earlier forms in Hamp are sometimes recorded such as Ham in Gillingham (Dorset) recorded as Hampe in 146.

The name may also derive from Middle English henep ‘hemp’, a much cultivated plant in the Middle Ages.
