Halko Family History
Halko Surname Meaning
Slovak (mainly Haľko) and Rusyn (from Slovakia; Haľko): from a pet form of the old personal name Hal Haľ a cognate of South Slavic Gal 2 ‘black’.
Finnish: probably a habitational name from a shortened form of a farm name beginning with Halko- from halko ‘split log’ which indicates the place where the firewood was made.
In Karelia however the surname is probably based on a Karelian vernacular form of the Russian Orthodox male personal name Galaktion of Greek origin.
